Bentley: It could get worse before it gets better

Jim Bentley has admitted things “could get worse before they get better” as Morecambe look to secure their League 2 survival.

Saturday’s disappointing 1-0 defeat at home to Mansfield means the Shrimps are only five points clear of the drop zone with five games to play.

Just two wins from 18 has left Bentley’s side looking over their shoulder and with games against high-flying Fleetwood and Scunthorpe to come things are getting a little too close for comfort.

Bentley said: “Saturday wasn’t the be all and end all but it might get worse before it gets better.

“You look at the table and think they’ll be two tough games but Scunthorpe’s at home and Fleetwood’s a derby match.

“We played Accrington who were bottom of the league and they beat us but we played Chesterfield and we beat them.

“Anyone’s capable of beating anyone and every game is tough. Who’s to say you haven’t got a better chance of beating Scunthorpe at home than Mansfield at home?”

The final five games start with the visit to face the Cod Army on Saturday.

Bentley said: “It’s another big game, a derby match for us.
“We’ve beaten them already this season but they’re going well and are right up there pushing for automatic promotion.

“It’s a big challenge but we’ve got to keep calm, keep working hard and stick together which we are doing.

“I don’t think we deserved to lose the game on Saturday, I don’t think we deserved to lose the game last week against Bristol Rovers, but when it’s going against you it goes against you.

“We go to Fleetwood now and then onto Scunthorpe and they’re massive games because we’ve got to get points on the board sooner rather than later.”
