Barry Roche column: Three points are what matters

Well they do say the sign of a good team is when you play badly and still win.

Because on Saturday we certainly played badly.

But let’s be honest, it may not have been pretty to watch but three points is three points and that really is all that matters at the end of the day.

I suppose we got a little lucky in that the opposition on the day are going through a rough patch because we might not have been so fortunate if we performed like that against one of the top sides.

It just goes to show that football is a strange game.

We played superbly at Gillingham and lost, only to then play poorly and win on Saturday.

It’s nice to have no midweek game so we can, weather permitting, have a good week on the training ground in preparation for our trip to Coventry in the FA Cup.

No doubt we will be forced to relive a certain someone’s hat-trick every day in the dressing room and on the training pitches.

Kevin Ellison was absolutely immense on Saturday and fully deserved the three goals.

He was gutted to have scored the first own goal of his career against Northampton so we were all thrilled for him after the game.

Everybody at the club is really looking forward to the cup game and we are all desperate to go down there and cause an upset.

Coventry have picked up some good results in the past week but nobody gave us a chance of beating Blackpool (in the Capital One Cup) and look how that turned out.

We know they had scouts watching us against Wimbledon so maybe after seeing the game they might just underestimate us a little.

It would be nice to think so anyway.
