Morecambe boss Jim Bentley is confident Kevin Ellison can maintain his fine start and be a big player for the Shrimps this season.

The Shrimps talisman, 35, has three goals in his first two league games this season and helped inspire the remarkable comeback to win 3-2 against Newport County at the Globe Arena on Saturday.

Bentley said: “Kev is just Kev and we know what we’re going to get.

“If we can manage him right he’s going to have a big season for us.

“And we should be able to do it more this season because we’ve got those extra bodies.”

The added depth to Bentley’s squad means Ellison is not alone in a side that looks full of goals having scored three times in each of the opening two League 2 games ahead of hosting Oxford United on Tuesday night.

The Shrimps boss said: “Paul Mullin (who scored Saturday’s winner) has got loads of potential and we’re looking forward to building on that.

“But there’s goals all over the team. There’s (Jack) Redshaw, Kev, Jamie Devitt will get assists and chip in with a few goals, Paul Mullin and big Jack Sampson is still learning and getting better all the time.”
