A last-minute goal condemned Morecambe to their second home friendly defeat in four days against Motherwell.

Padraig Amond had cancelled out Henri Anier’s early strike for the Scottish Premier League side but a 90th minute winner from trialist Jack Smith denied the Shrimps a draw at the Globe Arena on Saturday.

Stewart Drummond nearly gave the hosts the lead on three minutes, but Motherwell stopper Gunnar Nielsen beat away his header from an Andy Fleming free-kick.

Fleming then tested Nielsen himself, the former Manchester City man tipping a 30-yard drive round the post.

It was the visitors who went ahead on 17 minutes though, trialist Anier latched onto a through ball from Iain Vigurs before rounding Barry Roche and sliding the ball into an empty net.

The Shrimps kept coming though and Nielsen was called into action again to acrobatically stop a trademark left-foot piledriver from Kevin Ellison.

But they got their goal shortly after, Amond prodding home Marcus Marshall’s cross via a deflection to level things up.

Former Accrington Stanley man Amond could have doubled his tally five minutes later but headed over a corner from close range when he perhaps should have done better.

It was then the turn of Anier to have a chance of a second, but he could only shoot wide when in one-on-one with Roche.

In an open, entertaining pre-season encounter, Ellison then saw a tap in correctly ruled out for offside before Nielsen continued to impress, expertly keeping out a 25-yard effort from Fleming to keep things level at the break.

As so often in warm up games, the second half failed to match the first, but the Shrimps weren’t without their openings to take the lead.

Substitute Ryan Williams tested Faroe Islands international Nielsen with a dipping right-footed shot but the keeper again parried the effort wide.

But the visitors finished the stronger, Stephen McManus heading narrowly wide and Silva having an effort cleared off the line before Smith settled things. The trialist was unmarked at the back post to head past Roche and despite Hughes’ acrobatic clearance the ball was deemed to have crossed the line with Silva tapping into an empty net to make sure of the Motherwell victory.
