Lancaster City got their pre-season off to a flying start with a convincing win over near neighbours Garstang at Lancaster and Morecambe College on Tuesday night.
A late Tom Kilifin brace capped an encouraging display from Darren Peacock’s Dolly Blues as they romped to a 6-0 victory in a game played over three 30-minute periods.
The first half hour was closely fought as both teams struggled to find early rhythm.
New City striker Simon Wearing, a former Morecambe youngster, had the home side’s best chance of the opening third, but he shot wide when in one-on-one with the goalkeeper after beating his man with a sublime chest control.
After the interval the Dolly Blues began to move through the gears and got their opener shortly after the restart through Gavin Clark.
Cutting in from the byline the midfielder squeezed a powerful shot inside the post from a tight angle to give City the lead.
The new central midfield partnership of Danny Mahoney and former Morecambe stalwart Garry Hunter showed promise as the home side took control in the blazing sun.
City’s second was the goal of the game, neat passing build-up ended in Wearing setting up Aaron Taylor, who controlled the ball and placed it low under the keeper in one swift movement.
Former Kendal goalkeeper Damian Clifton was only called into action once to smartly tip a close-range shot over the crossbar.
Soon after Ryan Elderton made it 3-0 from the penalty spot, stroking the ball into the bottom-left corner as the game reached the second interval at the hour mark.
Simon Wills made it four with a fine diving header converting former Slyne winger Billy Akrigg’s cross before Kilifin got in on the act.
City’s top scorer last season made it five when he headed in Arron Jones’ corner unmarked on the penalty spot and he completed the scoring with time almost up, bursting forward and beating two defenders before powering a shot into the roof of the net.
Star man: Danny Mahoney. Very impressive display and controlled the game from midfield.
