Lancaster City 1-2 Prescot Cables

LANCASTER CITY slumped to a home defeat to third bottom Prescot Cables on Saturday in a poor affair at Giant Axe.

The visitor’s took the lead just before the break when Joe Gibiluru took advantage of several missed clearances from the Dolly Blue back four to slice a shot home.

At the beginning of the half Alex Johnson had two golden chances to put the home side ahead, for his first the ball bounced a bit too high for him and he hooked a left foot shot for a simple save for Michael Langley in the Prescot net.

His second chance was a golden one as Billy McKenna beat Lee Smith for pace and played a lovely ball across the goal which he skied from six yards.

Moments later McKenna crossed for Danny Hattersley who could not sufficiently trouble Langley.

At the other end City’s stand-in stopper Dave Rodgerson pulled off a wonder save to his left to deny Jason Massie a certain goal with his top-corner bound half-volley.

City equalised just before the hour mark when substitute Sam Nightingale arrowed in a throw-in from the left which was flicked into the bottom corner by the leaping Hattersley.

Before their 76th minute winner Prescot again tested Rodgerson and found him more than capable of denying Liam Pearson a close range header with a great reaction save.

Even Tony Rendall’s shocking swing at Rodgerson’s face, missed by the officials, could not deter the City stopper.

He was beaten by substitute Chris Rowntree though as he rounded him with ease before horribly slicing his chance wide of an empty net.

The winner was similar to the opener - sloppy defending from a corner with the ball hanging around the box for far too long before falling too Paul Williams to strike cleanly through the crowd and into the net.

The wait, then, is finally over for Dolly Blue fans as Tuesday nights cup final looms large, the crescendo to their season comes at the home of Witton Albion in the President’s cup final against Evo-Stik first Division South’s 12th placed side Belper Town.
