CHARLIE Lea is a name revered by many Shrimps’ fans for his performances many years ago.
But Charlie Lee is a name many will want to forget as his two goals for Gillingham on Saturday saw the Shrimps slump to their fourth defeat in six games and end the season on a low note.
The former Spurs wide man scored two excellent goals against a Morecambe side who once again showed plenty of promise but lack a vital killer instinct in front of goal.
Morecambe started well with Jordan Burrow forcing Gills’ keeper Paulo Gazzaniga into a save with a header from a Lewis Alessandra cross.
Burrow was then inches away from connecting with an excellent Jack Redshaw cross from the right as he slid in at the far post looking for his fourth goal in five games.
Gillingham, the league’s top scorers, went close early on when Danny Kedwell drilled a shot wide before the same player saw a close range header cleared acrobatically off the line by a flying Burrow.
The home side took the lead on 18 minutes with a quality strike from Lee who cut in from the right before producing a fine low finish that beat Barry Roche to his right.
The Shrimps came out strongly in the second half and played some excellent football to create a number of chances.
Andy Parrish headed over an Izak Reid corner and Redshaw was not too far away when he glanced a cross from Gary McDonald just wide of the right-hand post. McDonald was then played through on goal but shot weakly at Gazzaniga and Danny Carlton blazed a shot over when put through by the excellent Garry Hunter.
Substitute Niall Cowperthwaite tested Gazzaniga with a long range shot on 66 minutes with a shot he could only parry but the rebound fell just wide of Burrow who looked to follow up and the Shrimps’ striker stabbed a right footer just wide from the edge of the area when he should have done better.
Izak Reid then saw a shot deflected over after a flowing move and the failure to take one of the chances proved costly when Gillingham scored a second as Lee ran on to a fine through ball from Danny Jackman to slide the ball past Roche.
