A village football team got a visit from some Football League names to help celebrate a special anniversary.

A team of Football League veterans beat a Galgate FC veterans eleven 7-1 at the Recreation Field on Monday night to commemorate both the league and the North Lancashire League side celebrating their 125th birthdays.

Morecambe boss Jim Bentley, Shrimps physio Simon Farnworth, former Lancaster City managers Neil Wainwright and Michael Stringfellow and Garstang boss Iain Swan were all in action for the victors.

Galgate chairman Ken Beales said: “It was a wonderful night apart from the result!

“But that wasn’t what mattered it was great and there was a really good turn out.

“It looked like there were a few young veterans for the Football League side though I must say!

“But Jim and the others came in the dressing room to see everyone.

“It really went well.”

The club’s anniversary celebrations continue with a reunion dinner at Wyrebank in Garstang this Saturday, May 18.
