Morecambe Ladies dramatically moved into the next round of the Lancashire Cup with a 3-2 win at Chorley on Sunday.

The Shrimpettes had seen a 2-0 half-time lead slip away and with the game set to go straight to penalties after 90 minutes Laura Callis intercepted a weak pass and lobbed ‘keeper Leanne Smith to score a stunning winning goal at the death.

Nick Barrett’s side had hit the post twice in the opening minute before Mille Brown gave them the lead just before the quarter hour mark.

Striker partner Megan Doherty chested the ball down to Brown who hit a shot into the top-right hand corner of the Chorley net leaving Smith motionless.

The visitors were 2-0 up on 20 minutes, Brown’s header was parried by Smith into the path of Becky Whittingham who calmly doubled the lead.

Both teams battled hard until the break, Callis firing over for Morecambe.

Barrett’s side then started the second half the brighter, Doherty shooting straight at Smith when in one-on-one.

But the hosts pulled a goal back, Scarlett Smith crossing for Vicky Coupe to volley home and reduce the arrears.

Chorley had their tails up and levelled things up in the final minute of the game, the ball deflecting off Danni Toward’s leg and in from a disputed corner.

Penalties were looming but with one last push, Doherty pressed high up the field and Dawson’s pass was intercepted by Callis whose instinctive first-time shot looped over the stranded keeper’s head and into the net.
