Garry Hunter’s late goal handed Lancaster City the perfect start to 2015 with a 1-0 win at Clitheroe on New Year’s Day.

The influential midfielder’s strike a minute from time gave Darren Peacock’s side a much-needed three points in atrocious conditions in East Lancashire.

City went into the game having lost six of their last seven in the Evo-Stik First Division North and after battling poor weather in the opening period the visitors went on to dominate the second half.

Josh Draycott hit a crossbar as Matty Poole also went close as the Blues piled on the pressure in search of victory.

The game opened up in the closing stages with Ross Dent hitting a post for the hosts before Reece Pearce brought a good save from Clitheroe stopper Alex Palffy.

It was left to former Morecambe man Hunter to settle the game on 89 minutes, firing home in a crowded penalty area as the Dolly Blues picked up a big three points in the context of their season.

City next host Bamber Bridge at Giant Axe this Saturday, January 3.
