Megan Doherty scored a 30-minute hat-trick to send Morecambe Ladies into the semi-finals of the Lancashire Women’s Knockout Cup with a 3-0 win at Golborne.
It was all tied up at 0-0 when the Shrimpettes hotshot was introduced on the hour mark to try and break down a team two leagues below Nick Barrett’s side.
And Doherty wasted little time in making her mark, netting a glancing header from Hannah Paliing’s cross to put Morecambe in front with almost her first touch.
Five minutes later she had her second, nipping in front of the Golborne ‘keeper to score from another Paling pass.
The brace broke the Golborne resistance and Doherty finished the game off and sealed her hat-trick five minutes from time when she latched onto a loose ball and spotting the ‘keeper off her line, shot from 25 yards out and wheeled away to celebrate as it nestled into the empty net.
Barrett had rested Doherty and Becky Whittingham from the start leaving the responsibility to try to break down the home side’s defence to Laura Callis and Melissa Brown.
However, on a poor pitch, they found the going tough and on each attack, play seemed to break down with the ball bouncing in the opposite direction to which it was intended to go.
After a poor opening period Barrett introduced Whittingham in place of Nic Relph but it still took the arrival of Doherty to save the say in what had looked like a formality at the start of the day.
Morecambe play Preston North End Ladies in the last four in January.
The Shrimps ladies’ reserve side, the A team, were 3-2 victors over Southport Shoreline, Nicola Conway scoring twice and Lindsay Lambert scoring the other.
