Jim Bentley has urged Morecambe fans to look at the bigger picture after criticism over his team selection at Mansfield.
The Shrimps boss made five changes and switched to three centre backs in the 1-0 defeat on Tuesday night.
Bentley insisted the changes were made with combating Mansfield’s physical style and keeping his players fresh in mind.
He said: “People have this idea of Mansfield being a poor side but not for me.
“They’re a very strong, physical side and they’ve got points on the board this season by playing to their strengths.
“Mansfield away is one of the toughest places to go because you know what’s coming. We set up to nullify that and I think we defended really well.
“I’m not going to dwell on it. I’m the one who makes the decisions. We lost the game unfortunately but we’re fourth in the league.
“The three games that we’ve lost have all been by the odd goal. Last minute on Tuesday, last minute at Tranmere and a goal against Bradford that could have been disallowed.
“We’re doing okay. We’re hard to beat and we’re scoring goals. We’ve started better than last season and I’ve got to look at the bigger picture.
“We want to do well and win games now but we’ve got to look towards the second half of the season because that’s been our downfall.
“I’m not going to flog anyone until they blow up. I’ve got to make sure I manage the squad and there’s not much between the personnel.
“Formations, personnel, set-ups, what ever it is, on the night we got done by a long throw and to be fair we’d defended them really well.
“The bottom line is I changed things for the right reasons but we lost the game and we move on.”
