Jim Bentley believes there are plenty of positive signs for his Morecambe side after an encouraging friendly display against Wigan.
It took a stunning strike from Marc-Antoine Fortune 15 minutes from time to give the FA Cup holders a 1-0 win at the Globe Arena on Wednesday night.
Bentley said: “When you looked at the teamsheet and saw the players they had we knew it was going to be a difficult game.
“But once we adjusted to the quality of the opposition I think our shape was good and some of our football was excellent.
“I think we’ve gone up another notch from the other pre-season games and doing it in a game like this against the strongest team that we’ve played in pre-season is a great achievement by the lads.
“Things looks good, it’s now a case of now maybe polishing one or two bits up that we need to work on that we’re not 100 per cent happy with but you can see good signs there.
“Overall in terms of the workout and performance it was excellent.”
Against a near full-strength Latics side the Shrimps gave some of their younger players a start and Bentley admits he has a tough job picking a side for the opening League 2 game against Wycombe on August 3.
He said: “Some of the performances have made my job that little bit harder ahead of the Wycombe game.
“The fans can see what type of lads we’ve got. They’re all willing to work hard, run through a brick wall for the shirt and I’ve got a squad in there who all want to squeeze into 11 shirts come the Wycombe game.
“They can be proud of their efforts and we’ve put in a decent display.”
