JIM Bentley believes team spirit will be essential if Morecambe are to move forward next season.

The Shrimps legend said he believed the squad was too big last year and would be looking for more togetherness this season with a tighter knit group of players.

He told the fans’ forum at the Globe Arena: “We had too many players last year with about almost 30 players.

“It is easier to manage a smaller group because you get more togetherness. We are looking to bring a couple more kids through and some deserve a chance to progress.

“Nineteen or 20 may be a good number with the kids as well.

“The last thing I want to do is look at seven or eight players in the stand doing nothing. It doesn’t generate team spirit and togetherness.”
