MORECAMBE boss Jim Bentley said he was happy to see his side maintain their unbeaten away record with a hard-fought draw at Aldershot on Saturday.

After their 4-0 hammering at home to Fleetwood a week ago Bentley demanded a response from his side and he certainly got that as the Shrimps made it seven points from nine on the road and almost snatched victory at the death when Andy Fleming and Izak Reid were denied by a stunning double save from home keeper Jamie Young.

“We let ourselves down against Fleetwood and I wanted a reaction. I didn’t want the lads feeling down and letting it linger. They responded superbly and I’m very pleased with the result,” said Bentley.

“To claim three clean sheets in a row away from home is an unbelievable achievement and we have to be pleased with that. Barry Roche had a great game and we defended really solidly and if you don’t concede goals you always give yourself a chance.

“We almost snatched the three points at the death and their keeper has made a couple of great saves which spoiled what would have been a perfect afternoon.”

In a first half of few chances it was Aldershot who had the better opportunities with striker Craig Reid twice getting a chance to run on goal but twice being denied by good saves from Roche.

Bentley made four changes to the side that faced Fleetwood with young strikers Jack Redshaw and Jordan Burrow being given starts.

Redshaw showed early and blazed over after a fine run that took him to the edge of the Aldershot area and Burrow also dragged a shot wide after a quick counter attack.

The second half again saw few chances. Aldershot started on the front foot with Roche making his best save of the game from an Adam Mekki shot from the edge of the area.

Both sides continued to struggle to create opportunities until a final flurry of efforts.

Morecambe defender Robbie Threlfall produced a fine goalline clearance from a Sonny Bradley header before the Shrimps’ late surge which saw them go close to the win with Reid somehow denied a last-minute winner.
