AFTER already signing three players Morecambe’s determination to build a squad capable of taking next season’s Conference by storm took another step forward this week with a 45,000 bid for Leigh RMI winger Steve Jones.
Last week the Shrimps had an offer of 30,000 for the England semi-pro player rejected out of hand by the Hilton Park club but they have yet to provide an answer to the Shrimps’ latest bid.
Morecambe have now made an increased offer of 45,000 which is nearly double the previous most expensive player purchase when the club paid 25,000 to Northwich Victoria for Steve Walters last summer.
Jones, who it is rumoured is keen to join the club scored 21 goals last season for Leigh playing on the left wing.
Talking about the deal Morecambe’s vice chairman Graham Hodgson said: “We are hopeful that Leigh will sell the player but the ball remains in their court at the moment.
“Clearly we have offered a huge amount for Jones but it shows our commitment to building the squad that we feel will work best for us next season.”
Boss Jim Harvey said that Morecambe are also looking at a number of other players to strengthen the squad further.
