Two sisters finished first and second at the British Junior Aquathlon Championships held on the Olympic triathlon course at London’s Hyde Park.
City of Lancaster Triathlon athletes Sarah and Mary Hodgson took gold and silver at the PruHealth ITU World Championship Series event on Saturday, May 31.
The duo competed on the 750m swim and 5km run course as the crowds started lining the course ready for elite senior events.
The early pace in the swim was set by a lone swimmer with a small bunch including Sarah chasing her down with the next group including younger sister Mary.
Sarah exited the water in second place with Mary out in fourth place just over 30 seconds behind her sister.
A quick transition meant that Sarah took an early lead which she extended throughout the three-lap run.
Mary was still back in fourth at the end of the first lap but she had third in her sights and swiftly took the place.
As she turned into the final lap she moved into second holding a small lead over the third-placed athlete throughout the final lap.
It all the meant the podium was a real family affair with Sarah finishing in 27 minutes and 59 seconds to take gold and Mary a little further back in 30.19 for silver.
Sarah, currently based at Leeds University, said: “My swim was the weaker part so I was surprised to come out of the water with the leaders.
“From there it was just a question of running to bring it home.
“It’s amazing to be able to do it on the Olympic course and the atmosphere was great for it.”
In the corresponding Youth race, Heysham High School pupil Georgia Hannam also showed plenty of promise for the future finishing in seventh position.
