IT'S been a rollercoaster of a ride over the last week for everyone involved in the rebirth of Morecambe's Midland Hotel.

With scores of workmen adding the final touches to the stunning Art Deco building, developer Urban Splash held a VIP opening, entertained BBC film crews and finally opened the hotel to the general public on Sunday.

The hotel is now looking jaw-droppingly gorgeous and is open for anyone to hire rooms, enjoy a meal, sample spa treatments, pop in for coffee or enjoy drinks as the sun sets over Morecambe Bay.

On Sunday thousands of people visited the hotel for the first time while tradespeople added a few finishing touches.

The exterior of the building, which had been in a parlous state due to years of neglect, is now looking pristine and back to its '30s splendour. It's bespoke, weather-proof render, glitters in the sun and its graceful curves reek of glamour.

Inside The Midland it just gets better and better. The entrance hall is breath-taking with its beautiful spiral staircase and restored Art Deco features.

The friendly staff at The Mildland have hospitality down to a fine art and are looking forward to welcoming locals as well as people from across the world.

The masses visiting the hotel on Sunday appeared delighted with the funky designer furniture, stunning fixtures and fittings and the workmanship in general.

Why not go and see it for yourself!

VIP guests enjoyed a first taste of the high life inside the new Midland last Tuesday evening.

They gathered in the sun lounge and bar area for a preview of Morecambe's revamped art deco hotel as cameras from the BBC filmed for a special edition of The Culture Show.

Guests included VIPs from Urban Splash, Lancaster City Council and other local organisations, ex-Midland staff, Friends of the Midland and also comedian Jim Bowen who lives at Melling near Lancaster.

They enjoyed a special performance by the BBC Big Band in the hotel foyer which was recorded for TV and Radio 2, including songs from fabulous rising jazz star Beth Rowley.

The Midland Hotel edition of The Culture Show is expected to be broadcast on June 17 at 10pm.

Graham Clayton,

I am arriving to stay at the Midland Hotel tomorrow (3rd June), having booked at the end of last year. This was to be a special celebration for my wife's birthday. On arriving home yesterday I found an email and phone message asking me to contact the House Manager and with difficulty finally managed to leave a message on his mobile phone telling him I was waiting for his call. As yet he has not rung me, but I understand from Reception that my booking for a Penthouse Suite has been cancelled, possibly because of building work, and I am being down-graded; this is not the only problem I have had.

May I respectfully suggest that if you are writing further articles about the hotel you see if customers' experiences match the PR material you have been given.

Unfortunately, my partner and I seem to be in a similar situation to Graham, except that we had even less notice, having been telephoned on my mobile at lunchtime today and told our booking for Executive Suite 1 for tomorrow was cancelled. Like Graham, this was to have been a special occasion,(an anniversary gift). At this moment in time, having both booked leave from work we still do not know if we have any room at all for tomorrow, as we are still awaiting contact from the Midland to confirm.

most people in morecambe waited with eager antissipation for the opening of the midland hotel but as time grew nearer it was obvious to all that it was no way near ready, i feel that after all the hard work by all the people concerned it was stupid to open its doors with workmen still swarming all over the place, and to use people who booked in to the hotel as "guinea pigs" was selfish at the least ,just to prove a point that they hadnt over run the opening date , i only pray they havent shot themselves in the foot by doing this.

What's your view on the use of CCTV?
More the merrier - if you've done nothing wrong, you've nothing to worry about
Only appropriate in certain crime-spot areas
I'd be very worried if we had too many
