THEY say that everyone has a novel in them. But Heysham’s Mick Dilworth, has two.
The 38-year-old has his first book published this month and it’s got a very unusual twist.
“I’ve written a novel within a novel,” said Mick. “The publishers say they have never seen anything like it before.”
“It’s written from the viewpoint of someone that has written a book about a lady he used to know.
“He doesn’t think to change her name in the book, and the week it gets published he meets her again and she finds out what he thought about her through the book.”
Mick’s debut novel One More Time... follows the story of author Liam Kirk and his old flame Valerie Walters – 13 years after their illicit affair.
Liam’s novel is based on their relationship and the week it is published, Valerie gatecrashes his life for the second time. But will Valerie like it when she begins to discover how Liam felt about their original love affair?
Although the book is a work of fiction, Mick has based some of the book on events that took place in his own life and people he met in and around Morecambe.
“It’s based loosely on something that happened to me a long time ago,” said Mick.
“As all writers do, we tend to steal things from our own past.
“I bumped into someone that I used to know the other day and they said ‘I can’t wait to read the book’ and I thought ‘read it? you’re in it!’ ”
The 80,000-word book has been a labour of love for Mick, who has spent the last year-and-a-half writing the novel in his spare time.
“At first I started with the basic story of the book within a book,” said Mick.
