MORECAMBE Day 2012 featuring the Sunshine Awards is coming soon!

Held every year on the nearest Saturday to the birthday of the town’s favourite son Eric Morecambe, Morecambe Day on Saturday, May 12 is the day when The Visitor celebrates all that is wonderful about Morecambe.

And the Sunshine Awards Ball, held the night before on Friday, May 11 at the Midland Hotel, is when we also celebrate some of the people who help make Morecambe so special by presenting them with a Sunshine award.

This year we are looking for your suggestions on who should be on the short-list of nominations in our four open Sunshine award categories. Then we will draw up a short-list and ask you to vote for your winners.

So who do you think should win?

Our open categories this year are:

UNSUNG HERO

The Sunshine Unsung Hero award will be awarded to an individual who deserves recognition for their work in the Morecambe community. He or she could be a charity or community worker, a teacher, a group leader or anyone who sums up the term “unsung hero”.

COMMUNITY

The Sunshine Community award this year will be awarded to a community group. This could be an organisation, charity or similar. The winning group will have made a positive difference to the community of Morecambe.

SPORTS

The Sunshine Sports award will be given to an individual or a team who have excelled in the sporting arena. This could be a Morecambe sportsperson of any age, or a manager, trainer or coach, or a team.

ENTERTAINMENTS

The Sunshine Entertainments award will be given to an individual or group who has produced sterling work in the field of Morecambe entertainment, whether it’s in music, dance, performance arts, theatre, TV or comedy. The winner could be a performer, a teacher, an arts worker or anyone connected to Morecambe entertainment.

The closing date for nomination suggestions is March 16. We will reveal the short lists of nominations in The Visitor on March 20 when we will open the voting to the public in our open categories.
