THE Morecambe Bay cockling tragedy has become the latest target for motormouthed TV host Jeremy Clarkson.

The insensitive Top Gear star sparked a furore after making a joke in The Sun about the disaster in February 2004 when 23 Chinese cockle pickers drowned.

Writing about synchronised swimming, the Top Gear presenter said: “(‘It’s) Chinese women in hats, upside down, in a bit of water.

“You can see that sort of thing on Morecambe Beach. For free.”

Kim Leong, chairman of the Lancaster and Morecambe Bay Chinese Community Association, told The Visitor: “I was surprised and shocked to hear about Jeremy’s distasteful comments in The Sun’s news column on Saturday, January 7.

“I found it very insensitive especially as the eighth year anniversary is coming up next month.”
