PLANS have been announced to close the railway signal boxes at Bare Lane and Hest Bank.

Bare Lane signal box will close in February 2013 and Hest Bank in December 2012 and control of the level crossings and signalling functions will pass to an automated signal box at Preston.

Both boxes are currently manned. The Hest Bank box is staffed by a crossing keeper who operates the level crossing. The crossing at Bare Lane and signals on the lines between Morecambe and Heysham Port are operated from the Bare Lane box.

A spokesman for Network Rail said it was too early to say if the closures would lead to job losses but thought it unlikely.
