THE signs are that Morecambe could be given a new and improved brown road sign to direct visitors to the town, says a Lancashire tourism champion.

County Councillor Jim Lawrenson said moves were afoot to overhaul the current ineffective brown sign off Junction 35 of the M6 at Carnforth.

The sign only advertises Morecambe’s beach and tourist information centre. Campaigners want it to include more of the resort’s attractions but the Government has strict rules on the type of facilities brown signs are allowed to promote.

But Co Councillor Lawrenson, lead member for tourism on Lancashire County Council, said he was confident that “attitudes are changing”.

“We wanted a new brown sign on the M6 to direct people to the Brockholes nature reserve in Preston,” he said.
