Car park plans are ‘step in the right direction’

PARKING problems in the West End of Morecambe could be solved if a temporary car park opens for 12 months.

A new £19,000 car park could provide between 14 and 17 parking spaces on land formerly used as a play area on Parliament Street, claims a council report.

The report says a permanent car park is not affordable in the current climate but a temporary one would “enable demand and need for parking to be assessed”.

Traders in the West End are in favour of extra parking spaces, believing they are vital to the survival of the ailing shopping area.

Clive Fishwick, who runs Morecambe Business Services and Sweet Treats on Yorkshire Street, called the plans “a step in the right direction”.
