AN elderly driver tried desperately to stop his out-of-control car after the handbrake failed and managed to steer it into a cafe window.

The man, who had parked up on Princes Crescent in Bare to get a lottery ticket from the corner shop, suddenly saw his car rolling forward down the hill after the handbrake clicked off.

Police said he got caught in the door but was not able to stop his grey Volvo, which clipped another vehicle and then hit the bay window of The Bow Window Bistro.

Staff from the cafe tended to the pensioner, who received minor injuries in the incident.

Owner of The Bow Window Bistro, Gareth Davies said: “I just heard a cry of distress and realised something was happening so I went to the window.

“I saw the car going past with the man trying to grab the steering wheel. I knew it was going to be something serious.

“There was a god almighty thud as the car ended up in the bay window.”
