I was lucky enough to head down to Morecambe FC on Saturday for their clash with AFC Wimbledon.
The Shrimps are on a run of form, with eight unbeaten games under their belt. For a brief moment during the match, following Kevin Ellison’s firsthalf goal, they even topped the league.
It was but a brief flash of glory, outshone by the dramatic thunder and lightning and driving rain that dominated the second half, but it was a glimpse of the potential of Morecambe’s team and what they may achieve under Jim Bentley’s determined stewardship.
The actual match was a draw, the second half lacklustre and full of the wrong kind of tension, but what grabbed my attention was the truly amazing atmosphere at The Globe.
From the moment the adorable Shrimpettes cheered the teams on to the pitch, the excitement was easily equal to that on match day at any Premier League football ground.
And the day was about families, with young and old alike cheering their teams, and the away side’s crowd making themselves heard.
Morecambe FC is a real boon to our town and we must keep supporting them.
