Details behind the planning application for the mooted Opus North development at the former Frontierland site are now emerging.
With high street giants, Primark, Mothercare and other names showing an interest in coming to Morecambe, it is clear there is a hunger for a shopping development of this type in the area by retailers. Of course, it will not be until planning permission is passed, if it is passed, that any big names sign up...and the true picture of any potential development will emerge.
Although the application has been earmarked for approval by planning officers, it willstill have to be passed by Lancaster City Council’s planning committee on Monday morning.
So, do we want it? Morecambe does urgently need investment, but not at any price.
However a large shopping development of this size, with quality retailers, will bring people to Morecambe, particularly if free parking is part of the deal.
Those people will want to explore Morecambe and with good signposting and links (money has been put aside for this as part of the planning deal) they would be able to find their way through the town.
It is a shame the development plans do not have more style, an art-deco theme or offer something more.
But we should not dismiss out of hand. It is a start.
