Hardened Morecambrians are used to the chill factor, particularly those who take regular constitutionals on the prom.
But the issue of temperature is a heated one at the resort’s iconic but decidedly chilly wintry ‘Winter Gardens’.
This weekend the venue hosted what was possibly the biggest and certainly one of the most successful events in its recent history with two gigs by comedian Jon Richardson and friends to raise money for St John’s Hospice and the Winter Gardens – raising an astonishing £28,000 for the hospice and more than £5,000 for the theatre itself.
But unfortunately this is a mere drop in the ocean of what the Winter Gardens needs.
Although the event itself was amazing, the audience and performers faced bundling up in as many clothes as possible to beat the cold. Put simply the Friends of the Winter Gardens who run the historic and stunning theatre cannot afford the heating system it needs. Even comedian Jon Richardson weighed in, commenting, “This was the first gig where I can actually see my breath” and “The Visitor will probably say I’ve perished on stage with the cold.”
The will is obviously there to make this place amazing – but how do we find the money? We would love to hear your views.
