News that a key plan has been voted through by Lancaster council - although some councillors admit not even reading it - is frankly disgrraceful.
Not, of course that I don’t understand the difficulties of ploughing through long complex documents . And, yes, many of them also have full time jobs.
But in this case one councillor even admitted being ‘underqualified’ for the job. - and I doubt he was alone. But that doesn’t make it right.
We’ve all ticked a box without reading the fine print but when that tick concerns key strategy that will determine future policies in Morecambe, Lancaster and beyond - it is absolutely not acceptable.
The voted-in members of the council are not likely to ever to be qualified in every issue they are asked to cast vote - but a system needs to be inplace to make sure that those who don’t understand are given coaching to ensure they grasp the subject - and are therefore fairly representing the futures of those people that voted them in , in the first place.
This is Council 101, surely.
