FRIENDS of the Winter Gardens have been left sickened after thieves stole protective lead off the roof causing £15,000 damage.
But defiant campaigners say the callous theft won’t stop their fight to restore the magnificent old theatre.
It is believed the culprits climbed onto the roof from the Winter Gardens car park some time last week, stripped away almost 500 sq ft of lead and carried it off in a wheelie bin.
The theft was only detected when rain began pouring in to the Grade II* listed theatre on Thursday night. “It sickens me, it’s one step forward and two steps back,” said Evelyn Archer, chair of the Winter Gardens Preservation Trust.
