The famous Morecambe Scooter Weekend is under threat after promoters put the brakes on this year’s event.

Organisers of the annual VFM rally, which pulls in more than 1,000 bikers each year, gave Morecambe a miss because The Carleton club’s closure left them without a suitable venue.

Rob Ellershaw, landlord of the Ranch House pub, said: “The VFM rally was our biggest weekend of the year.

“The Carleton closing and the loss of The Dome too, has had a knock-on effect on landlords in the vicinity and hoteliers.

“I’m in talks with the Bath Hotel to see if we can run our own ska, mod and punk weekend later this year.”

John Bolland, from VFM, said: “There aren’t many suitable venues left in Morecambe.”

But the rally could return.

Mr Bolland added: “We go to a town for a few years and scooterists say it’s the same old, same old. We take a break and then people say they can’t wait to come back.”
