The district’s latest strongman sensation is set to take on America.

Following in the footsteps of World’s Strongest Man competitors and training partners Graham Hicks and Jack McIntosh, Shane Jerman is off to take on the world across the pond.

The Morecambe muscle man was recently crowned Britain’s Strongest Man under 80kg and will take part in the Arnold Sports Festival, named after film star Schwarzenegger, in Columbus, Ohio next month.

There he will take on the world’s best in his weight category but he’s in confident mood.

The 22-year-old who works for Axa Insurance said: “The win in Britain’s Strongest Man under 80kg qualified me for the Arnold which will be like the first ever World’s Strongest Man for that weight.

“They’ll be 20 other guys from all over the world competing as well but everyone says I’m going to win.

“When I won Britain’s under 80 I won every event so I think I should be alright!”

Shane, of Hexham Road, Torrisholme, is starting his fourth year in the sport having got the bug working at Salt Ayre gym.

He said: “I was working for Salt Ayre gym, and the manager got me involved.

“I started training hard and was introduced to Graham (Hicks) and now we train together some times.

“It’s going well and I’ve also done some under 90kg events.

“I came second in Britain’s Strongest Man under 90 which was the first event in that weight class to be televised.

“That qualified me for the European event in Dublin in September where I came fifth.

“I’ve never competed out of the UK and Ireland so it’s going to be a new experience.”

Shane flies out on February 26 ahead of his event on March 1.
