A Lunesdale community is planning a fun-packed weekend in a bid to provide an alternative to its former Victorian fair.
Kirkby Lonsdale’s The Big Weekend will be held on September 7 and 8 and include attractions at venues throughout the town.
It is hoped the activities will replace the fair, which has not taken place since 2009 after visitor numbers dropped sharply.
Town community manager Jane Richmond has worked with community groups, the town council and the local chamber of trade in organising the free event.
She said: “Our once-famous Victorian fair was never properly replaced but people kept asking what was happening on the first weekend in September - that’s what Kirkby’s famous for.
“We decided to show ourselves off. The Big Weekend will include craft demonstrations, workshops, children’s activities, a brass band and handbell ringing performances, face painting, a vintage fair, a fashion show,
bric-a-brac, police and fire and rescue displays, a 1940s Homeguard display and lots more.
“The weekend will show Kirkby Lonsdale at its best.”
Organisers hope the event will attract hundreds of visitors to the town.
