APPRENTICES at Heysham power stations and a local builder have helped repair 250 memorial plaques damaged in an attempted theft from St Peter’s church, Heysham.

Last May Rev David Tickner, vicar at St Peter’s, disturbed the thieves who left the damaged plaques in the church yard.

Left with a damaged wall and plaques Rev Tickner took the opportunity to first catalogue the plaques before approaching local businesses for help.

Local builder Bob Howard repaired the wall, while apprentices at Heysham power stations looked at the plaques.

Rev Tickner said: “They had a tough job, first cleaning the plaques of old mortar before renewing the bolts on the back which will allow Bob to put them back in place.
