Car parking charges swelled our council’s coffers by £1,624 in 2011/12, new figures have revealed.
Lancaster City Council placed 94th in a league table of 359 councils in England for generating the most profit through its car parks, according to a survey by the RAC Foundation. Westminster came top with a profit of £41,599 while Essex was 359th with a loss of £1,802.
Figures were based on annual returns to the Department for Communities and Local Government, and includes revenue from on-street parking permits, off-street charges and parking penalties.
These were offset against the cost of running parking operations.
