Police station counter will stay open
Carnforth police station’s front counter service will remain open despite reports to the contrary, police have said.
Concerns had been raised after a volunteer who mans the front counter claimed their hours were being reduced.
Carnforth town councillor Ken Bond said: “The front counter facilitates members of the public to hand documents in and raise other questions.
“It has proved to be a valuable service. If the front desk team are working reduced hours there has been no consultation and no warning.”
Inspector Jim Edmonds, Morecambe Police said: “Carnforth police station runs a limited front counter service with the assistance of a team of volunteers.
“The hours of opening are determined by the availability of the volunteers, to whom we are very grateful for giving up their time to help their local community.
“We have been in discussions with Lancashire Fire and Rescue Service to see if it is possible for us to share premises in Carnforth, which would be both cost effective in these austere times and would also allow us to work together to the benefit of local residents.
“However, proposals for any relocation with the fire service are still under discussion and as such the police station and the volunteer front counter, remains open at this time.”
Lancashire Constabulary has closed 14 front counters including Garstang and Cleveleys but 24 will remain open.
The review of front counter services was sparked by the Comprehensive Spending Review and a need for the Constabulary to save £43 million by 2015.
