NEARLY 1,000 music lovers have signed a petition hoping to bring a bandstand back to Morecambe.

Howard Rogerson, founder and conductor of the town’s light music orchestra, is a driving force behind a campaign for a bandstand in Happy Mount Park.

Mr Rogerson and other campaigners originally hoped they could persuade Lancaster City Council to move the old bandstand in Ryelands Park.

But recently the city and county councils announced plans to set up a Ryelands Park improvement project which could include upgrading the bandstand.

“If that happens, that’s great, but there are still a lot of people who would like a bandstand in Morecambe,” said Mr Rogerson.

“It would be much more comfortable for the players.”

Happy Mount Park currently hosts a Sunday summer programme of brass band music in the open air.
