Peru trek next for Lancaster hospice

It now handles thousands of visitors a day. The best time to visit is after lunch when day trippers have returned to their homebound trains.

This year saw 31 trekkers take on the Great Wall of China, raising more than 94,000 for the Slyne Road hospice.

The successful trek has prompted the making of another challenge on the other side of the world.

In March 2018 people are being offered the chance to visit the unique Machu  Picchu in Peru.

“The first thing people were asking us when we got back was where are we going next?,” said Sue McGraw, chief executive at St John’s Hospice, in Lancaster.

The Peru challenge comes after the life changing experiences for trekkers in China.

One trekker said: “It was so emotional, it was the biggest adventure I had ever been on, having spent months and months planning and prepping for the trip to have finally finished and achieved what we all set out to do was brilliant and I can’t wait for the next one!”

“My massive highlight was ‘the group’,”said another trekker.

“I couldn’t have wished for a better bunch of people to conquer my biggest adventure with.”

The China trek, which took place on September 17 and lasted 10 days, also marked the hospice’s 30th anniversary year.

More than 100 people have registered their interest for the Machu Picchu trip.

For many people, the Incan citadel set high in the Andes Mountains, is at the top of their “bucket list”.

St John’s will be holding an information evening on Wednesday November 23 at the hospice on Slyne Road, at 7pm.

Skyline, the tour operator who helps the hospice to organise the trip, will be there to tell visitors about what to expect, an example itinerary and the once in a lifetime sights you will encounter.
