INSPIRATION for Bram Stoker’s Dracula novel and training ground for the famous explorer Captain Cook, the fishing port of Whitby in North Yorkshire is one of my favourite places to visit in the UK.
Despite the freezing weather, January is actually an excellent time to visit Whitby as there are so few tourists.
The town’s cobbled streets and vast beaches are quiet, leaving the few visitors and locals to enjoy the brooding magnificence of the place uninterrupted.
Sparky and I stayed in a delightful guest house called the Shepherd’s Purse. Tucked away down a quiet ginnel, this quirky place had a Bohemian feel and was up in the eaves one of Whitby’s oldest buildings. I’d definitely recommend it as a place to stay and it had a fantastic cafe called Sanders Yard right next to it.
