It’s almost 40 years since Morecambe Football Club first went up Wembley Way, writes Greg Lambert.

April 27 1974 was the date, Dartford were the opponents and the FA Trophy was the prize.

The Shrimps scored a famous 2-1 victory in front of 20,000 people and brought the cup back to thousands of delirious fans who greeted the team at the town hall.

Under the player-management of Dave Roberts, assisted by Gerry Irving, Morecambe’s FA Trophy win was their finest hour until 33 years later when they returned to Wembley to earn promotion to the Football League in May 2007.

With thanks to Terry Ainsworth and our archives, here are some memories of that heady day and those 1970s hairstyles!
