CHILDREN have been designing and writing postcards is a competition with the theme of Morecambe’s threatened Venus and Cupid sculpture.
Artist Shane Johnstone, who is hoping that his promenade sculpture will be saved from the wrecking ball, organised the competition at Morecambe’s annual Catch the Wind kite festival on July 24.
He is now expanding the competition so that everyone in the local area can have the opportunity to design and write a postcard about the sculpture.
Shane was delighted with the quality of the entries and the thoughtful messages in the children’s competition.
There were 70 entries, most of them from the local area.
Shane said he would like to meet with local councillors to discuss the future of the statue so that the matter can be resolved. Some town councillors are for keeping the sculpture whereas others want to see it go and don’t want to pay for it.
