THE pub many of its customers have described as “the best in Morecambe” has closed down.
Ma Murphy’s Irish pub shut down on Tuesday for what is believed to be financial reasons leading to a flood of tributes on its Facebook page.
Popular landlord Colin Smith, originally from Ireland, took over the Lines Street pub in 2004 and turned the business around from its previous guise as the Bull Hotel.
Ma Murphy’s became renowned as a live music venue and was packed most weekends.
York Hotel licensee Mick Dennison, chair of Morecambe Pubwatch, said: “It was an iconic pub. It’s terrible news and a sad reflection of how the town is going.”
The Park Hotel on Regent Road in the West End is another Morecambe pub to have closed recently, as did The Carleton nightclub.
