GIANT heavyweight boxer Tyson Fury is the last person you might expect to be a victim of mistaken identity.

But the 6ft9in contender was exactly that when arrested at gunpoint by police in Holland.

Morecambe-based Fury, 24, and three of his team were stopped by armed cops because they matched the description of a wanted gang following a hold-up in which a man was shot dead.

The fighter was on his way to training camp on the Dutch-Belgian border when he was ordered to lay face down in the dirt as a police helicopter whirred overhead.

Fury protested his innocence but was only released after being held in a jail for 11 hours.

Tyson, who is preparing for a televised fight next month in Somerset, said: “I couldn’t believe it.

“There were eight police shouting and pointing their guns at us.

“Some guys in a bar had given the police a description of the robbers and apparently it matched us in our X5 BMW.

“I was shocked but I kept calm because I knew we had done nothing wrong.

“It was the strangest thing that has ever happened to me.”

The unbeaten Fury’s is preparing for his next fight against American Vinny Maddalone live on Channel 5 on Saturday, July 7.
