Town councillors oppose Morecambe promenade plans

MORECAMBE Town Council has unanimously voted to object to revised plans for the resort’s central promenade from developers Urban Splash.  

Councillors debated the proposals, which include high-rise flats, shops and cafes on the land next to the Midland Hotel, at their meeting at Morecambe Town Hall last night, Thursday, July 19.

Lancaster City Council has the final say on all planning matters with a decision expected later this year. The town council are consulted on the matter but have no decision making powers.

At a packed town hall, residents and councillors gave their views on the plans.

From the public gallery, Sue Thompson of the Friends of the Midland Hotel said: “It will rock that business. People won’t come if there’s a building adjacent to it.”

Resident Steve Williams said: “I believe we need a referendum. I have scrutinised the planning application and it’s clear as mud.”

After residents had given their views, councillors debated the issue before voting against the plans.

Councillor David Whitaker commented: “I would vote against this on many issues. Accommodation. The housing market is dead.

“I don’t think (Urban Splash chairman) Tom Bloxham has done his homework- we need to get him here to speak to the people.”

Councillor Tricia Heath said: “It’s not realistic that Urban Splash go to another site, for example Frontierland, but this is not the right development.

According to a town council report following a survey in Morecambe’s Arndale Centre, 69 per cent of residents asked were against the plans.

But some readers contacted @The_Visitor on Twitter to say they supported the plans.

Simon (‏@KostaFortune) said: “Shocking. Our town needs all the help it can get to flourish. Typical negativity of our town strikes again.”

Urban Splash first submitted plans for the area in December 2007 but a public outcry forced them to go back to the drawing board.
