Teen cleared of Facebook riot charge

A TEENAGER who wrote on Facebook he was going to “start a riot” has been cleared of wrong-doing.

Warren Calvert, 19, of Kingsway, Heysham, posted the comment on the social networking site during last summer’s street violence in London and Manchester, Preston Crown Court was told.

The court heard Calvert told police: “It was only a laugh” and he denied a charge of encouraging or assisting in the commission of an offence believing it would be committed.

The jury cleared him in under an hour.

hey sand ... you say it's a waste to monitor kids tweets and commentns but who are tomorrows convicts and killers? Where do we look to find them? On social networks of course, like they used to find future convicts in comparable forums of yesteryear ... like in back alleys and pubs etc I say kids making posts are dangerous even if they say hey I'm just mucking about

if the authorities had any real vision and backbone they would have carried this through to prosecution ... but as it is they got him in the dock then turned all soft, preferring to tell him off and issue a warning ... a slap of the wrist beccause they might be scared of public backlash ... i tell you this is what our country is becoming ... a blank slate with no real goals or purpose ... True, the initial charges might have been trumped up and out of proportion but if the boys in blue felt his crime was legitimate to put him in court, they should have followed through .with at least some sentence

Ignorance is no defence when breaking the law but I agree the court case was a complete waste of our public money. A stern telling off at the beginning explaining the consequences of his actions would of done the trick.

Pleased to hear it. There is a vast difference between making a daft comment within your circle of friends and shouting from the roof tops to all and sundry. Whoever is responsible for tracking him down, charging him and bringing him to trial should be sacked. What a waste of public money.
