Strongman Shane taking on the world - VIDEO

Waiting for Video...

A jet-setting strongman narrowly missed out on the biggest win of his career in America.

Shane Jerman, of Hexham Road, Torrisholme, came close to victory at the Arnold Classic in Columbus, Ohio, and is back in action on the other side of the world in Australia this week.

The 22-year-old was leading going into the final event of the festival named after film star Schwarzenegger, but slipped during the wheelbarrow pull meaning he finished fifth, just falling short of being unofficially crowned the world’s strongest man under 80kg.

The Axa employee said: “I was winning after the first three events but slipped, span around and fell a metre before the line in the fourth.

“That meant I went from first to fifth out of 23. It was just one of those things.”

Shane, a training partner of fellow district strongmen Graham Hicks and Jack McIntosh, was confident going into the event as the reigning Britain’s Strongest Man under 80kg.

And despite his disappointmen it is an experience he will always remember.

He said: “One of the guys came over and said he knew I was the best there it just wasn’t my day. It’s still the best week I’ve ever had.

“I’m usually competing in front of 100 people but there were thousands at the Arnold.

“I’m just pretty gutted about the result, although I’m getting over it now.”

His next event will see him compete in Australia’s Strongest Man Under 90kg this Thursday, March 14, at Melbourne Park, at the start of the Formula 1 motor racing season.

Shane said: “I don’t know much about F1 but I’ll be competing at the first race.

“I can’t win the trophy but want to try and top the points table.

“There’s a guy from down south going who beat me by a couple of points at an event last year, so it’d be nice to get revenge on him.”
