Shrimps fan’s love from afar

He is one of Morecambe FC’s biggest fans – supporting them from 1,200 miles away in Slovenia.

Miha Jurgec, from Maribor, told The Visitor he has been following the Shrimps’ fortunes from afar since 2008.

The 24-year-old media student, who lives in Slovenia’s second biggest city Maribor, said he was drawn to the Shrimps by their successful ascent from non-league football the year before.

Miha said: “I started following the club after they were promoted to League Two.

“I think I liked the fact that they finally made it there after so many years in the lower leagues.

“When they produced a couple of shocks in the League Cup, I knew they were going to be a team I’d follow for a long time.

“This year hasn’t been ‘our’ best but it can always get better! Hopefully we can climb up some places until the end of the season to ensure our safety.”

Miha hasn’t managed to make it over to see the Shrimps in person but is looking forward to trying to get to the Globe Arena when he comes to study in Manchester.

He said: “The last time I was in England was in 2007 and I wasn’t yet a fan back then.

“However, I am starting my Digital Media Management course in Manchester early next year, so that will give me the opportunity to watch the odd game.

“I don’t think there are any other Morecambe fans in Slovenia, since lower league clubs hardly ever get a mention.”

Miha, whose favourite Shrimps player is Nick Fenton, supports NK Maribor in his homeland and wouldn’t mind seeing a game between the two sides.
