Roundabout collapse could have been tragedy
A MUM claims her three-year-old son could have been beheaded when a fairground ride damaged by youths collapsed.
Louise Cooper's son Maximas was in a small bus on a carousel ride when a part of the flooring came up and the roof fell down in front of her son. Luckily, the perspex windscreen on the bus shielded Maximas from serious injury.
Lancaster City Council, which subsidises Taylor's funfair on the former Bubbles site in Morecambe, said the damage was thought to have been caused by a group of young men who had jumped onto the ride.
The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) is still investigating the incident which happened on August 18 at 6.50pm.
Louise, who has two daughters and another son, said: "Just before the accident happened two or three older boys came up to the support pole.
It could well have been that the boys damaged the ride but I didn't see them doing anything. I just want to know how and why it happened."
She said Maximas is physically well, but that he wakes up and cries in his sleep.
Following accident reports from Taylor's, a city council spokesperson said: "It is clear that the incident occurred as a result of the actions of a number of visitors to the fairground who boarded the ride uninvited and not because of any underlying maintenance issues.
"The ride has been repaired and brought back into use. Based on the evidence to date the council is satisfied that there is no risk to the public from the ride in question and will continue to monitor the situation."
Taylor's was unavailable for comment at the time of going to press.
