Resort link to horse meat scandal
The multi-millionaire boss of a company at the centre of the horse meat scandal was born in Morecambe.
Tycoon Lyndon Lea owns a third of Findus, the company whose frozen lasagnes have been found to contain 100% horse meat.
Lea, 44, runs private equity firm Lion Capital, which bought Findus in a £1.1bn deal in 2008.
A horse lover and accomplished polo player, he owns a £25m beach house and ranch in Santa Barbara, California, and luxury homes in Kensington and Berkshire.
Lea was born in Morecambe in 1969, the son of engineer David Lea and hairdresser Sylvia Morton, who lived on Norton Road in Heysham.
His grandparents Jimmy and Meg used to run a newsagent at the bottom of York Bridge.
Lyndon and his parents emigrated when he was very young, and he spent his childhood growing up in South Africa, Botswana and Canada.
He studied business at the University of Ontario, then joined investment bankers Goldman Sachs, before founding Lion Capital in 2005.
Divorced Lea has a reputation for throwing lavish parties at his mansion and living the playboy lifestyle.
Stories to emerge from his ranch in California include parties with sushi served on half-naked women and a polo soiree attended by Sienna Miller and Tommy Lee Jones.
Lea has relatives who live in Morecambe.
His auntie Ann Harrison, from Heysham, said: “He’s risen to greater heights. There’s been a lot of stories in the national papers written about him on the way up.”
