Residents protect property following garden thefts
RESIDENTS have been working with the police to protect their property following a spate of thefts.
A number of solar lights and statues have been taken from gardens in Bell-Aire Park Homes, on Middleton Road, Heysham, on weekends and late at night.
Members of the local neighbourhood police team have met with the site's committee members to discuss ways in which residents can improve security and prevent further theft.
The site has installed CCTV cameras and residents have been given crime prevention packs, including UV marker pens that can be used to put postcodes on valuable items.
This helps return stolen property to its rightful owner if it is later recovered by police.
The site has also banned cold callers – those who arrive at a door unannounced to sell items or offer their services – and residents have been given 'no cold calling' stickers for their windows.
PCSO Linda Willis, Heysham neighbourhood police team, said: "We have been giving crime prevention advice to everyone at the site and we are working together to make the area safer.
"Residents should lock valuable garden items away at night so that they don't provide temptation to thieves and can also consider measures such as chains on hanging baskets or benches. Postcoding items is also a good idea as this helps identify the owner."
Anyone who wants to discuss improving safety measures at their home can contact police on 01524 63333.
